Global fig production reached 1.15 million tons in 2017, and Turkey ranks first with a 26% share of the world’s total output. Figs are cultivated across many regions of the country, especially in the Aegean and Mediterranean areas. Aydın is the most important production center, and a large portion of Turkish figs are processed as dried fruit. Approximately 60% of national production comes from Aydın, while 15% is supplied by the İzmir region. As global demand for dried figs—a product in which Turkey leads both production and exports—has increased in recent years, the number of fruit-bearing fig trees has rapidly grown, reaching about 7.5 million. In the 2019/2020 season, dried fig production reached a record 90,000 tons.
